We went along to a presentation of Concrete Dreams: The Rise & Fall of Cumbernauld Town Centre, a project exploring the life and legacy of one of Scotland’s most ambitious post-war megastructures.
Through a mix of photography, illustration and first-hand accounts, the work offers a layered reading of the building, part social history, part architectural reflection, capturing both the optimism of its original vision and the complexities of its current condition.
It was a thoughtful and grounded discussion, less about nostalgia and more about how we value, adapt or let go of large-scale modernist infrastructure. A useful reminder, particularly in the context of our own work, of the importance of narrative, memory and lived experience alongside the physical fabric of a place.
